Best exercise ball chairs for an office desk
A ball chair is the only active seat whose height you cannot adjust with a lever - it is set by the ball. So the published diameter and seat height are the whole purchase.

What we did and did not do
Units we claim to have tested: 0. Everyone in this category says they tested twenty chairs. We have not sat in any of these, and we say so.
What we did instead: compiled every figure each manufacturer publishes, computed the fit ranges from a cited anthropometric table, and linked the source for each number so you can check the arithmetic. Where a manufacturer does not publish a figure, we say that rather than filling the gap. The full method, including what we cannot assess, is here.

Buy the Safco Zenergy. It is the only ball chair in this field that publishes a seat height at all for each of its two builds - 20 in on feet, 23 in with the legs fitted - plus the footprint at each, a 250 lb capacity and a GreenGuard certification nothing else here claims. If 20 or 23 is not the number your desk wants, the Aeromat Elite is the only ball chair we found with a continuous height adjustment: 20 to 23 in, on lockable casters.
Here is the problem this page exists to solve. A ball chair's seat height is set by how much air is in the ball, and almost nobody in the category publishes what that height comes out at. Four of the six listings here state a ball diameter or a user-height window instead and leave you to work backwards - which is how people end up with a 65 cm ball at a 29 in desk and shoulders round their ears.
Second thing to know: the ball deflates. Not dramatically, but continuously, and a ball at 80 percent pressure is a lower seat than the one you set up. Every maker here ships a pump for exactly that reason, and two of them print inflation instructions that involve letting it stretch for 24 hours before the final top-up.

01 · Best Overall
Safco 4750BL Zenergy Ball Chair
8.2/10 · scored on the published rubric
The only ball chair here that publishes two seat heights and the overall footprint at each - 20 in on feet at 17.5 by 17.5, or 23 in on legs at 22.5 by 22.5 - and it is GreenGuard certified, which nothing else in this field claims.
Why you might not: Those two heights are the whole adjustment: there is no range in between, so if your desk wants 21.5 in you are choosing which way to be wrong. It also never states the ball diameter.
| Seat height | 20-23 in |
|---|---|
| Footprint | 22.5 x 22.5 in |
| Rated capacity | 250 lb |
Adjustments published (3): two build heights: feet only for a 20 in seat, legs plus feet for 23 in; anti-burst ball on four fixed legs rather than casters; manual pump included.
Not published by the manufacturer: ball diameter; warranty term; any seat height between the two builds. We have flagged these rather than guessed.

02 · Only Adjustable Seat Height
Aeromat 75037 Elite Yoga Ball Chair
8.6/10 · scored on the published rubric
The only ball chair in this field with a genuine height range rather than two fixed builds - 20 to 23 in - plus a 12 in published seat surface, lockable casters and a back support Aeromat is careful to say is for positioning rather than reclining.
Why you might not: At 250 lb it carries 50 lb less than the Gaiam frames, and it is the most expensive seat in this field. The back does not recline, so do not buy it expecting a chair back.
| Seat height | 20-23 in |
|---|---|
| Seat width | 12 in |
| Rated capacity | 250 lb |
Adjustments published (4): seat height, 20 to 23 in, continuously adjustable; 360-degree swivel base; lockable caster wheels; removable anti-burst ball with a flush air plug.
Not published by the manufacturer: ball diameter; warranty term; back support height. We have flagged these rather than guessed.

03 · Highest Published Capacity
Gaiam 610-6002RTL Classic Balance Ball Chair
7.4/10 · scored on the published rubric
The highest published capacity here at 300 lb, with a stated user-height window of 5 ft 0 in to 5 ft 11 in - the only figure in this category that tells a tall buyer to stop reading.
Why you might not: Gaiam publishes a 31 in overall height and no seat height at all, so you cannot check it against your desk before it arrives. Over 5 ft 11 in you need the leg extenders, sold separately.
| Footprint | 22 x 22 in |
|---|---|
| Rated capacity | 300 lb |
| Maker's stated user height | 5 ft 0 in to 5 ft 11 in |
Adjustments published (4): removable 52 cm ball; adjustable metal support bar; 4 casters, 2 of them lockable; 2 in of extra height available via separate leg extenders.
Not published by the manufacturer: seat height; warranty term; backrest height. We have flagged these rather than guessed.

04 · Only One With Arms
CanDo 30-1791 Metal Ball Chair, 22 in, with Arms
6.8/10 · scored on the published rubric
The only ball chair here with arms, and the only one that publishes its ball diameter in inches - 22 in - alongside a 250 lb capacity and the same 5 ft 0 in to 5 ft 11 in user window Gaiam states.
Why you might not: Arms on a ball chair work against the point of one: they give you somewhere to brace, which is exactly the load the ball is meant to put through your trunk. It is also the heaviest frame here at 18.5 lb.
| Footprint | 26 x 22 in |
|---|---|
| Rated capacity | 250 lb |
| Maker's stated user height | 5 ft 0 in to 5 ft 11 in |
Adjustments published (3): 22 in ball on a metal frame; five 360-degree swivel casters; hand pump included.
Not published by the manufacturer: seat height; warranty term; arm height. We have flagged these rather than guessed.

05 · Best Budget
Gaiam 05-63739 Essentials Balance Ball and Base Kit, 65 cm
6.0/10 · scored on the published rubric
The cheapest honest way into active sitting on a ball: the largest ball in this field at 65 cm, a 300 lb anti-burst rating, and a ring base that keeps it where you left it. The ball lifts straight out for floor work.
Why you might not: No back, no casters and no published seat height. Gaiam publishes the ball size and leaves you to work out what that sits at under your desk, which is the opposite of how we would like to buy a seat.
| Rated capacity | 300 lb |
|---|
Adjustments published (3): 65 cm anti-burst ball, removable from the base for floor work; inflatable ring base that stops the ball rolling; air pump included.
Not published by the manufacturer: seat height; user height window; warranty term. We have flagged these rather than guessed.

Skip This on the Specification
Champion Sports BCHX FitPro Balance Ball Chair
3.2/10 · scored on the published rubric
The tallest published back section in this field, on a 22 by 22 by 31 in wheeled frame that assembles in minutes.
Why you might not: Skip this on the specification. Champion publishes the frame's dimensions and nothing else: no ball diameter, no capacity, no seat height. On a seat you use all day, a capacity figure is not optional.
| Footprint | 22 x 22 in |
|---|
Adjustments published (3): removable ball in a wheeled plastic frame; sculpted tall back section; hand pump included.
Not published by the manufacturer: ball diameter; rated capacity; seat height; user height window; warranty term. We have flagged these rather than guessed.

What height ball do you actually need?
Same arithmetic as every other seat on this site, and it is worth doing before you buy because a ball cannot be cranked down afterwards. Your seat height should put your feet flat on the floor with the back of your knee slightly higher than the seat - OSHA's own criterion - which for most adults is 16 to 20 in.
| Ball | Nominal diameter | Roughly suits | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 52 cm | 20.5 in | Users around 5 ft 0 in to 5 ft 6 in | The two Gaiam frames here |
| 55 cm | 21.7 in | 5 ft 4 in to 5 ft 9 in | Not represented in this field |
| 22 in | 22 in | 5 ft 0 in to 5 ft 11 in, per CanDo | The CanDo metal frame |
| 65 cm | 25.6 in | 5 ft 9 in and up | The Gaiam Essentials kit |
Two makers publish a user-height window and both state the same one: 5 ft 0 in to 5 ft 11 in. Gaiam adds that leg extenders buy you another 2 in, sold separately. Nothing in this field is designed for someone over 6 ft, and no amount of inflation fixes that - a ball big enough to raise the seat is also a ball too soft to sit on. If you are tall, a drafting chair or a tall task chair is the honest answer.
How we ranked these
- Fit range - published seat height first, then ball diameter, then whether the maker states a user-height window. A frame that publishes a seat height in inches scores top; one that publishes only a ball size is asking you to do its arithmetic.
- Adjustability - countable published mechanisms: height builds or a continuous range, swivel, lockable casters, removable ball. Only one chair here adjusts continuously.
- Capacity headroom - published rated capacity against the 250 to 300 lb band this field occupies. One listing publishes none at all.
- Materials and build - anti-burst construction, frame material, base width, certifications. Safco's GreenGuard certification is the only third-party mark in the field.
- Spec coverage - how many of the above the maker publishes. The full rubric is here.
Every published figure, side by side
| Ball chair | Seat height | Ball | Capacity | Back | Casters |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Safco Zenergy (rank 1) | 20 or 23 in | - | 250 lb | No | No - four legs |
| Aeromat Elite (rank 2) | 20-23 in, adjustable | - | 250 lb | Yes, positioning only | Lockable |
| Gaiam Classic (rank 3) | - | 52 cm | 300 lb | Yes | 4, two lockable |
| CanDo 30-1791 (rank 4) | - | 22 in | 250 lb | Yes, with arms | 5 swivel |
| Gaiam Essentials (rank 5) | - | 65 cm | 300 lb | No | No - ring base |
| Champion FitPro (rank 6) | - | - | - | Yes, tall | Yes |
Read the bottom row. Champion publishes its frame as 22 by 22 by 31 in and then nothing else - no ball diameter, no capacity, no seat height. It is labeled Skip This rather than ranked low because on a seat that carries your whole body weight for eight hours, a rated capacity is not a nice-to-have.
What a ball chair is actually for
It is the most unstable seat we cover, and instability is the entire mechanism. The ball deforms continuously under you, so your trunk makes small continuous corrections. That is the same idea as a wobble stool, taken further - and taken further has costs as well as benefits.
- No height lever. Every other active seat on this site adjusts with a pneumatic handle. A ball adjusts by inflation, slowly, and only within the range one ball size allows.
- No lumbar support, on four of these six. A ball is a sphere; it does not have a lumbar curve to put support into. The two frames with backs here support you while you are upright, not while you lean.
- It deflates. Budget for checking the pressure monthly, and keep the pump.
- Most people do not last a full day on one. The honest use is a few hours as one of several positions - which is the same advice OSHA gives about any single posture.
If none of that appeals but the idea does, the cheapest version of the same idea is a [balance disc on the chair you already own](/support/wobble-cushions) - under twenty-six dollars, no frame, no inflation schedule.
What we have not done
We have not sat on any of these. Every figure on this page is copied from the manufacturer's published specification with the listing linked on each card. How firm a ball feels at its stated pressure, and how a frame behaves after a year of being rolled over a carpet edge, are not on a spec sheet.
Listings in this category routinely claim that sitting on a ball strengthens your core, improves posture and relieves back pain. We are not repeating those as benefits. Nothing here is medically reviewed. What the specification supports is that the seat is unstable and that your trunk works to keep you on it.
What we looked at and left out
Exclusions are explainable or they are not exclusions. Each of these failed a published disqualifier, and the reason is the spec, not a preference.
| Product | Why it is not ranked |
|---|---|
| Trideer Exercise Ball Chair with Base | Publishes no ball diameter, no capacity and no seat height - and the identical bullet text appears under two separate ASINs at two different prices. On a page ranked on three published figures, a listing with none of them cannot be placed. |
| DRAGONN by VIVO Ergonomic Kneeling Chair | If what you want is the forward hip angle rather than the instability, a kneeling chair gets you there with a published seat-height range and a frame that does not deflate. [Reviewed here](/reviews/dragonn-kneeling-chair); the two are compared directly on [kneeling chair vs ball chair](/compare/kneeling-chair-vs-ball-chair). |
