Best wobble cushions and balance discs for a chair
Twenty dollars buys the only active-seating upgrade that works on the chair you already own. Two published figures decide which one: diameter, and inflated thickness.

What we did and did not do
Units we claim to have tested: 0. Everyone in this category says they tested twenty chairs. We have not sat in any of these, and we say so.
What we did instead: compiled every figure each manufacturer publishes, computed the fit ranges from a cited anthropometric table, and linked the source for each number so you can check the arithmetic. Where a manufacturer does not publish a figure, we say that rather than filling the gap. The full method, including what we cannot assess, is here.

Buy the JFIT disc. It is the only wobble cushion in this field that publishes a rated capacity - 350 lb of anti-burst rating - and at 13 in with an inflation straw in the box it is also the cheapest thing on this page. If you want the figures rather than the price, the AppleRound is the only disc here that publishes both its diameter (13.5 in) and its inflated thickness (2.1 in), and the only one that tells you which side to sit on.
This is the cheapest active sitting there is, and it is the only kind that works on the chair you already own. It is also the most oversold. A disc does one thing: it puts an unstable, compliant surface between your sit bones and a flat seat, so your trunk makes small continuous corrections instead of none. That is a real difference from a rigid pan. It is not a substitute for a stool that actually tilts.
Two published figures decide which disc. Diameter, because a disc narrower than your sit bones puts your weight on its rim rather than its center - which is uncomfortable rather than unstable. And inflated thickness, because thickness is the travel: a 2.8 in disc has somewhere to move, a disc inflated flat is a mat.

01 · Best Overall
JFIT Inflatable Balance and Stability Disc, 13 in
7.8/10 · scored on the published rubric
The only wobble cushion in this field that publishes a rated capacity: 350 lb of anti-burst rating, which is more than any other disc here states and more than several of the stools on this site.
Why you might not: It publishes no inflated thickness, and thickness is what decides how much the disc actually moves under you. A 13 in disc inflated flat is a mat.
| Footprint | 13 x 13 in |
|---|---|
| Rated capacity | 350 lb |
Adjustments published (2): air pressure, via the included inflation straw; textured grip surface.
Not published by the manufacturer: inflated thickness; warranty term; material thickness. We have flagged these rather than guessed.

02 · Only One That Publishes Both Figures
AppleRound Inflated Wobble Cushion, 13.5 in
8.0/10 · scored on the published rubric
The only disc here that publishes both a diameter (13.5 in / 34 cm) and an inflated thickness (2.1 in), and the only one that tells you which side to sit on - fine dimples for sitting, large spikes for standing.
Why you might not: No rated capacity anywhere on the listing. It states that it conforms to toy safety requirements, which is a materials claim and not a load figure.
| Thickness | 2.1 in |
|---|---|
| Footprint | 13.5 x 13.5 in |
Adjustments published (2): air pressure, via the included hand pump; two textures: large spikes one side for standing, fine dimples the other for sitting.
Not published by the manufacturer: rated capacity; warranty term. We have flagged these rather than guessed.

03 · Widest Disc Here
Gaiam Balance Disc Wobble Cushion, 16 in, 05-61636
7.6/10 · scored on the published rubric
At 16 in across it is the widest disc here by two and a half inches, which matters: a disc narrower than your sit bones puts your weight on its edge rather than its center.
Why you might not: Gaiam publishes no capacity, and across its three near-identical disc listings it answers the pump question differently each time. Buy it assuming you supply the pump.
| Thickness | 2 in |
|---|---|
| Footprint | 16 x 16 in |
Adjustments published (1): air pressure, for firmness preference.
Not published by the manufacturer: rated capacity; warranty term; whether a pump is included. We have flagged these rather than guessed.

04 · Thickest, and Ships Inflated
bintiva Inflated Stability Wobble Cushion, 13 in
6.6/10 · scored on the published rubric
Ships inflated with a pump for adjustment, which makes it the only disc here you can sit on the day it arrives. It publishes 13 in / 33 cm and the thickest profile in the field at 2.8 in.
Why you might not: No capacity published, and the listing leans on sensory-seating and back-pain language we are not going to repeat as a benefit.
| Thickness | 2.8 in |

| Footprint | 13 x 13 in |

05 · Best Non-Slip Surface
Trideer Wobble Cushion, 13.4 in
6.0/10 · scored on the published rubric
A 13.4 in disc with a non-slip texture and a pump in the box, priced in the middle of the field.
Why you might not: Neither thickness nor capacity is published, and most of the listing is written for classroom and sensory seating rather than for an adult at a desk.
| Footprint | 13.4 x 13.4 in |
|---|
Adjustments published (2): air pressure, via the included pump; non-slip textured surface.
Not published by the manufacturer: inflated thickness; rated capacity; warranty term. We have flagged these rather than guessed.

Skip This One
Gaiam Balance Disc Wobble Cushion, 16 in (Black)
6.2/10 · scored on the published rubric
Same 16 in diameter as Gaiam's other listing, and it arrives partially inflated with an inflation needle so you can set the firmness yourself.
Why you might not: Skip this one on the listing alone. The title says "Pump Included" and Gaiam's own final bullet says "Air pump not included" - and an inflatable product you cannot inflate is not a product.
| Thickness | 3.38 in |

| Footprint | 16 x 16.38 in |

How we ranked these
- Fit range - on this page that is published diameter, measured against the 13 to 16 in band these discs occupy, and whether a maker publishes it in the bullets rather than only in the title.
- Adjustability - air pressure is the only adjustment a disc has, so this scores on whether a pump is included, whether it ships inflated, and whether the maker explains how to set firmness.
- Size and footprint - diameter against a standard 17 to 19 in seat pan, and inflated thickness where it is published. Only four of these publish a thickness.
- Materials and build - PVC specification, anti-burst claims and published capacity. Exactly one disc in this field publishes a capacity figure, which is why it is ranked first.
- Spec coverage - how many of the above the maker publishes at all. The full rubric is here.
Every published figure, side by side
| Disc | Diameter | Inflated thickness | Capacity | Pump |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| JFIT (rank 1) | 13 in | - | 350 lb | Inflation straw |
| AppleRound (rank 2) | 13.5 in / 34 cm | 2.1 in | - | Hand pump |
| Gaiam 05-61636 (rank 3) | 16 in | 2 in | - | Not stated |
| bintiva (rank 4) | 13 in / 33 cm | 2.8 in | - | Included, ships inflated |
| Trideer (rank 5) | 13.4 in | - | - | Included |
| Gaiam 16 in, black (rank 6) | 16 in | - | - | Stated both ways |
Read the last row. Gaiam's black 16 in disc says "Pump Included" in its title and "Air pump not included" in its own final bullet. Both statements are on the same listing. It is labeled Skip This rather than ranked low, because an inflatable product whose inflation accessory is an open question is not a product you can buy on its specification.
Will a disc raise my seat height?
Yes, by roughly its inflated thickness - two to three inches - and that is the part people get wrong. Every other add-on on this site that raises you by that much comes with the same warning, and a disc is no different: if your seat height was already correct, adding 2.8 in puts your feet off the floor and your forearms below the desk.
The fix is the usual one. Drop the chair by the same amount if it still goes that low, or put your feet on a footrest if it does not. OSHA's criterion is that the entire sole of the foot rests on the floor with the back of the knee slightly higher than the seat - which a disc breaks quietly, because you are concentrating on the wobble rather than your feet. Work out your own seat height here.
Disc, stool, or ball?
Three products get sold on the same idea and they are not the same purchase.
| What moves | What it costs | Published figure to shop on | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Balance disc | A compliant surface on a rigid seat | Under $26 here | Diameter and inflated thickness |
| [Wobble stool](/active-seating/wobble-stools) | The whole seat tilts on a domed base | Roughly five to ten times a disc | Published seat-height range and tested capacity |
| [Ball chair](/active-seating/ball-chairs) | The entire seat deforms under you | In between | Ball diameter, rated capacity, seat height |
The disc is the only one of the three that you can try without replacing your chair, which is exactly why it is the sensible first purchase. If you like what it does, the stool is the upgrade; if you do not, you have spent twenty dollars finding out.
What we have not done
We have not sat on any of these discs. Every figure here is copied from the manufacturer's published specification with the listing linked on each card.
Most listings in this category are written for classroom and sensory seating, and several make posture, back-pain and core-strength claims. We are not repeating those as benefits. What a disc demonstrably does is make the surface under you compliant and slightly unstable; what that does for you over months is not something a specification can tell either of us.
What we looked at and left out
Exclusions are explainable or they are not exclusions. Each of these failed a published disqualifier, and the reason is the spec, not a preference.
| Product | Why it is not ranked |
|---|---|
| Gaiam Balance Disc Inflatable Cushion (Core and Stability Trainer) | Gaiam's third listing for what appears to be the same 16 in disc. The title says 16 in; the listing's own dimension block says 14.96 by 13.19 by 2.36 in; not one bullet states a diameter at all. We rank discs on diameter, so a disc with two diameters is not rankable. |
| ERGO COLLECT Adult Wobble Stool | If the wobble is the point rather than the price, buy the stool instead of the disc. A wobble stool publishes a seat-height range and a tested capacity and tilts under you deliberately; a disc is an inflatable pad on a chair that does not move.
