Best rolling shop stools for a garage or workbench
A 36 in workbench and a car on jack stands want stools six inches apart. Most listings do not make that obvious, so the published height range is the first thing to check.

What we did and did not do
Units we claim to have tested: 0. Everyone in this category says they tested twenty chairs. We have not sat in any of these, and we say so.
What we did instead: compiled every figure each manufacturer publishes, computed the fit ranges from a cited anthropometric table, and linked the source for each number so you can check the arithmetic. Where a manufacturer does not publish a figure, we say that rather than filling the gap. The full method, including what we cannot assess, is here.

Buy the WORKPRO W112010A if you sit at a workbench, and the BestGlory T02 if you sit at a car. That is the whole decision, and it is a six-inch one: the WORKPRO runs 29 to 33.86 in and the BestGlory runs 18.7 to 24.5 in. Neither reaches the other's working height, and the listings in this category are not careful about saying so.
If you want a back and somewhere for your feet, the ROCKLER is the only workbench-height stool here that publishes both: 29 to 33 in, an adjustable backrest and a metal foot rail. It is the one to buy for an eight-hour bench day rather than a twenty-minute job.
A standard workbench is 34 to 36 in, which is counter height, not desk height. Sitting at one needs a seat around 29 to 34 in - the same band as the drafting chairs on this site, and nine inches above an office chair. That single fact is the most common buying mistake in this category.

01 · Best Overall for a Workbench
WORKPRO W112010A Hydraulic Shop Stool
7.3/10 · scored on the published rubric
The right height band for a workbench, published precisely: 29 to 33.86 in, a 13.78 in seat and 330 lb of rated capacity, which is the most capacity per dollar in this field.
Why you might not: No backrest and no foot ring. At a 33.86 in seat height your feet are a long way off the floor and this stool gives them nowhere to go.
| Seat height | 29-33.86 in |
|---|---|
| Seat width | 13.78 in |
| Rated capacity | 330 lb |
Adjustments published (2): seat height, 29 to 33.86 in on a hydraulic lift; 360-degree swivel.
Not published by the manufacturer: footrest or foot ring; warranty term; cylinder class. We have flagged these rather than guessed.

02 · Best With a Back and a Foot Rail
ROCKLER Pneumatic Shop Stool with Adjustable Backrest
8.0/10 · scored on the published rubric
The only workbench-height stool here that publishes a backrest AND a foot rail, which is the combination that makes an eight-hour bench day survivable. Rockler says no assembly is required.
Why you might not: 250 lb is the lowest capacity in this field, and Rockler publishes neither the seat width nor how far the backrest actually moves.
| Seat height | 29-33 in |
|---|---|
| Rated capacity | 250 lb |
| Footrest | fixed |
Adjustments published (4): seat height, 29 to 33 in on a pneumatic lever; adjustable backrest; 360-degree swivel; metal foot rail.

03 · Highest Published Capacity
BestGlory T02 Rolling Shop Stool with Backrest
7.2/10 · scored on the published rubric
The highest published capacity here at 350 lb, the lowest floor at 18.7 in, a contoured backrest and the only cylinder in this field given a published class rating. Two trays, one of which swivels.
Why you might not: A 24.5 in ceiling is a low-bench and under-car height, not a workbench one. If your bench is 36 in, this stool does not reach it.
| Seat height | 18.7-24.5 in |
|---|---|
| Rated capacity | 350 lb |
Adjustments published (5): seat height, 18.7 to 24.5 in, pneumatic; contoured backrest; middle tray swivels 360 degrees; bottom tray has 5 sections; five casters; Grade 3 pneumatic cylinder, as published.
Not published by the manufacturer: seat width; footrest or foot ring; warranty term; tray dimensions. We have flagged these rather than guessed.

04 · Rolls or Stays Put
DEWALT DXSTAH025 Rolling Shop Stool
6.8/10 · scored on the published rubric
The only stool here that ships both casters and fixed feet, so you decide whether it rolls - and the 22.5 to 26.75 in band suits working at a car or a low bench rather than a standing-height one.
Why you might not: It is the most expensive stool in this field and it tops out at 26.75 in, which is well below a 36 in workbench. No foot ring either.
| Seat height | 22.5-26.75 in |
|---|---|
| Footprint | 15.75 x 15.75 in |
| Rated capacity | 300 lb |
Adjustments published (4): seat height, 22.5 to 26.75 in, pneumatic; 360-degree swivel seat; both casters and nylon feet supplied, so it rolls or stays put; wire storage shelf underneath.
Not published by the manufacturer: seat width; footrest or foot ring; warranty term. We have flagged these rather than guessed.

05 · Only Adjustable Foot Ring
LWADALN 305Y Garage Stool with Adjustable Footrest
6.5/10 · scored on the published rubric
The only shop stool here with a foot ring that adjusts independently of the seat - 13.78 in across - plus two locking casters, which is what stops a stool drifting while you are leaning into a job.
Why you might not: LWADALN publishes no rated capacity at all, and on a stool sold for garage work that is the figure a buyer most wants. It states how far the foot ring is across but not how far it moves.
| Seat height | 20-26 in |
|---|---|
| Footrest | adjustable |
Adjustments published (5): seat height, 20 to 26 in; height-adjustable foot ring, 13.78 in in diameter; padded backrest; 3 removable tool trays; 360-degree PU casters, two with brakes.
Not published by the manufacturer: rated capacity; seat width; warranty term; foot ring travel. We have flagged these rather than guessed.

Skip This on the Specification
GEARWRENCH 86992 Adjustable Height Swivel Shop Stool
4.0/10 · scored on the published rubric
A solvent-resistant seat is a genuinely useful feature in a shop, and the 26 to 31 in band bridges the gap between the under-car stools and the workbench ones.
Why you might not: Skip this one on the specification. Two bullets and a title are the whole listing: no capacity, no seat width, no foot ring. For the same money WORKPRO publishes 330 lb.
| Seat height | 26-31 in |
|---|
Adjustments published (3): seat height, 26 to 31 in; 360-degree swivel; solvent-resistant padded seat.
Not published by the manufacturer: rated capacity; seat width; footrest or foot ring; warranty term. We have flagged these rather than guessed.

Two stools, one category
| You are working at | Surface height | Seat height needed | Stools here |
|---|---|---|---|
| A workbench or tool station | 34-36 in | 29-34 in | WORKPRO, ROCKLER, GEARWRENCH |
| A car on the ground, or a low bench | 24-30 in | 20-27 in | DEWALT, BestGlory, LWADALN |
| A car on jack stands or a lift | Varies | Whatever adjusts furthest | BestGlory (5.8 in), LWADALN (6 in) |
The honest version of this is that most garages need two. One tall stool at the bench, one low roller for working around a vehicle. Nothing in this field spans both - the widest range here is 5.8 in and the gap between the two use cases is nine.
How we ranked these
- Fit range - published seat-height range, scored against the band the stool is clearly built for rather than against the whole field. A bench stool is not failing because it does not reach under a car.
- Adjustability - countable published mechanisms: hydraulic or pneumatic lift, swivel, backrest, caster versus foot, trays, and whether the foot ring moves.
- Capacity headroom - published rated capacity. The field runs 250 to 350 lb where it is stated, and three listings state nothing at all - unusual for a category sold on being heavy duty.
- Footrest provision - whether a foot ring or rail exists and whether it adjusts. Above about 24 in your feet leave the floor, and at 33 in they are a long way off it.
- Materials and build - frame material, finish, seat covering and whether it resists solvent or oil. No maker in this field publishes a warranty term.
- Spec coverage - how many of the above the maker publishes. The full rubric is here.
Every published figure, side by side
| Stool | Seat height | Range | Capacity | Back | Foot ring |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| WORKPRO W112010A (rank 1) | 29-33.86 in | 4.9 in | 330 lb | No | No |
| ROCKLER (rank 2) | 29-33 in | 4.0 in | 250 lb | Yes, adjustable | Yes, rail |
| BestGlory T02 (rank 3) | 18.7-24.5 in | 5.8 in | 350 lb | Yes | No |
| DEWALT DXSTAH025 (rank 4) | 22.5-26.75 in | 4.25 in | 300 lb | No | No |
| LWADALN 305Y (rank 5) | 20-26 in | 6.0 in | - | Yes | Yes, adjustable, 13.78 in |
| GEARWRENCH 86992 (rank 6) | 26-31 in | 5.0 in | - | No | No |
Two things worth reading twice. The LWADALN is the only stool in this field whose foot ring adjusts independently of the seat - that is the mechanism that lets a tall stool stay usable, and it is rare enough that a published 13.78 in ring diameter is worth the rank even though LWADALN publishes no capacity. And the GEARWRENCH is labeled Skip This for the opposite reason: a title, two bullets, a solvent-resistant seat and no capacity figure at all, at the same price as a stool that publishes 330 lb.
Trays, casters and the things that actually annoy you
Casters versus feet is a real decision and only one stool here lets you have both. A rolling stool is excellent on a smooth slab and infuriating on a sloped drive - it drifts the moment you lean. DEWALT ships casters and nylon feet in the same box; LWADALN and BestGlory fit five casters with two of them locking, which is the next best thing.
Tool trays sound like a gimmick and are not. Three stools here carry them and the reason is that getting up is the expensive part of a job: a tray at seat height keeps the sockets you are halfway through within reach. BestGlory's middle tray swivels; LWADALN fits three removable ones. Neither maker publishes the tray dimensions, which is the figure that would tell you whether a socket set actually fits.
And a backrest is worth more than it looks on a stool this tall. Three of these have one. On a bench stool at 33 in your feet are already off the floor; something to lean against is the difference between a seat and a perch. If a perch is what you actually want, perch and leaning stools are a different and cheaper answer.
What we have not done
We have not used any of these stools. Every figure here is copied from the manufacturer's published specification with the listing linked on each card. How a caster behaves with metal swarf in it, and how a vinyl seat survives brake fluid, are not on a spec sheet.
This category is sold almost entirely on the phrase "heavy duty", and three of the listings we checked publish no rated capacity at all. Where a maker states a figure we have printed it; where it does not, the gap is printed instead.
What we looked at and left out
Exclusions are explainable or they are not exclusions. Each of these failed a published disqualifier, and the reason is the spec, not a preference.
| Product | Why it is not ranked |
|---|---|
| CoVibrant 095 Industrial Swivel Shop Stool | Publishes a 29.3 in overall height and then nothing: no seat-height range, no rated capacity, no seat width. On a page ranked on the range against your bench, there is nothing here to rank. |
| WORKPRO W112003 Heavy-Duty Garage Shop Stool | A good stool at exactly one height. The seat is fixed at 29 in with no lever, and WORKPRO itself tells you to measure your bench against that number before buying - which is honest, and also the reason it cannot be a pick on a page about range. |
