Best salon stools for stylists, lash techs and barbers

You do not work at one height. A styling chair, a shampoo bowl and a lash bed are three different heights, and the published range is what decides whether one stool covers them.

What we did and did not do

Units we claim to have tested: 0. Everyone in this category says they tested twenty chairs. We have not sat in any of these, and we say so.

What we did instead: compiled every figure each manufacturer publishes, computed the fit ranges from a cited anthropometric table, and linked the source for each number so you can check the arithmetic. Where a manufacturer does not publish a figure, we say that rather than filling the gap. The full method, including what we cannot assess, is here.

A barber shop interior with a leather chair facing a mirror

Buy the Boss Be Well B245-BK. It is the only stool in this field that publishes the complete set - a 20.5 to 26.5 in seat-height range, a 16 by 16 in seat, a 20 in chrome foot ring and a 275 lb capacity - and the antimicrobial vinyl is a real feature in a room where surfaces get wiped between clients. If you work low, over a lash bed or a pedicure station, the KLASIKA Low Wide reaches down to 16.9 in, which is the lowest floor anyone here publishes.

The reason this page ranks on range rather than on height is that salon work has no single height. A styling chair pumped up for a cut, a shampoo bowl, a nail table and a lash bed are four different working heights, and you move between them all day. A stool with a 6 in range covers most of that. A stool with 3 in does not, and no amount of comfort makes up for being at the wrong height over a client's head.

Second figure: seat width. The stools here run from 13.3 in to 16.1 in across, and seat width is what carries your sit bones through an eight-hour day. A narrow seat tucks under a station better and is harder to sit on for a full shift - a real trade, and only four makers here publish the number.

01 · Best Overall

Boss Office Products B245-BK Be Well Medical Spa Stool

8.8/10 · scored on the published rubric

The only stool in this field that publishes the full set: a 6 in seat-height range, a 16 by 16 in seat, a 20 in foot ring and a 275 lb capacity. The antimicrobial vinyl is a real feature in a room where surfaces get wiped between clients.

Why you might not: The foot ring is fixed, so it only lands right for one leg length - and on a stool that reaches 26.5 in, feet are the thing most likely to be dangling.

02 · Highest Published Capacity

SONGMICS UOSC061B101 Round Rolling Stool

7.2/10 · scored on the published rubric

The highest published capacity in this field at 300 lb, on the widest base at 22 in, with a 15.7 in seat and a published 3.9 in of cushion - the only stool here that states how thick the padding is.

Why you might not: No footrest and no foot ring at all. At its 23.2 in ceiling most feet still reach the floor, but there is nowhere to put them if you raise it for a taller client chair.

03 · Lowest Published Seat Height

KLASIKA Low Wide Rolling Stool with Backrest

7.2/10 · scored on the published rubric

The lowest published floor in this field at 16.9 in, which is the figure that matters when you work over a reclined client - a lash bed, a pedicure station or a facial chair sits far below a styling chair.

Why you might not: A 20.5 in ceiling is the lowest here too. If you also work at a standing-height station, this stool cannot reach it and you would need the 25 in option instead.

04 · Highest Reach With a Foot Rest

KKTONER BBS0432 Round Rolling Stool with Foot Rest

7.2/10 · scored on the published rubric

The highest published ceiling in this field at 25.2 in, with a foot rest and a published 2.6 in cushion, at the cheap end of the price range. A 13.3 in seat is narrow on purpose - it tucks under a station.

Why you might not: 13.3 in is narrower than the 15 to 16 in seats here, and seat width is what carries your sit bones. For an eight-hour day over a client, measure yours against it first.

Published figures, from the KKTONER listing. Blank rows below are figures the manufacturer does not publish.

05 · Best Budget With a Back

Yaheetech Adjustable Rolling Salon Stool with Backrest

5.3/10 · scored on the published rubric

The widest usable height span here for the money - 5.7 in from 18.5 to 24.2 - with a padded back, a 265 lb capacity and a 20.5 in base, at the cheap end of this field.

Why you might not: Yaheetech publishes no seat width, no cushion thickness and no footrest. Everything it does publish, the Boss stool publishes too, with a foot ring.

Kcelarec Swivel Salon Stool with Removable Backrest

2.8/10 · scored on the published rubric

The cheapest stool with a removable back we could verify, on five casters, in bonded leather.

Why you might not: Skip this one. Kcelarec publishes "a 6 in vertical height range" without saying where that range starts or ends, and no capacity at all - so the one figure that decides whether a stool fits your station is missing.

Adjustments published (3): hydraulic lift with a published 6 in vertical range and no stated endpoints; 360-degree swivel on 5 casters; removable curved backrest.

Not published by the manufacturer: seat height floor and ceiling; seat width; rated capacity; warranty term. We have flagged these rather than guessed.

Work out your range before you shop

The rule is the same as anywhere else on this site: your elbows want to be at the height of the thing you are working on, bent between 90 and 120 degrees with your shoulders relaxed. OSHA states that target for a keyboard; it is the same joint and the same angle over a client's head.

What you work over, and the stool height it usually wants. Measure your own stations.
Working overTypical station heightStool seat heightStools here that reach it
A lash bed or facial chairAround 24-28 in17-20 inKLASIKA Low Wide, SONGMICS
A nail tableAround 29-30 in19-22 inAll but the lowest
A styling chair, seated clientAround 30-34 in20-24 inAll six
A shampoo bowl or raised chairAround 36 in24-26.5 inBoss, KKTONER

Then check the foot ring. Above roughly 22 in, your feet stop reaching the floor, and a stool with nowhere to put them transfers that load onto the front edge of the seat and the back of your knees. Three stools here publish a footrest; the Boss publishes its diameter (20 in) and none publishes whether it adjusts. Why a footrest matters is covered here.

How we ranked these

  • Fit range - published seat-height range, measured as the span rather than the ceiling. A stool with 6 in of travel covers more stations than a taller stool with 3 in.
  • Adjustability - countable published mechanisms: gas lift, swivel, backrest, caster type, and whether the back comes off.
  • Capacity headroom - published rated capacity against the 250 to 300 lb band this field occupies. Two listings publish none.
  • Footrest provision - whether a foot ring exists and whether its diameter is published. Nothing here publishes a foot-ring height adjustment.
  • Materials and build - upholstery, base material and base width, cylinder certification where stated. No maker in this field publishes a warranty term.
  • Spec coverage - how many of the above the maker publishes. The full rubric is here.

Read the last row. Kcelarec publishes "a 6 in vertical height range" and never says where that range begins or ends, and no capacity at all. It is labeled Skip This because on a stool bought to match a specific station height, a range floating free of any number is the one thing that cannot be checked.

Round seat or saddle seat?

Both are sold to the same professions and they do different things to your hips. A round stool seats you with your thighs roughly horizontal, the same as any office chair. A saddle seat drops your thighs away from you and opens the hip angle, which is why clinicians who lean forward over a patient all day tend to end up on one.

If you lean in constantly - lash extensions, facials, dental hygiene - the saddle is worth reading about before you buy a round stool. If you mostly sit upright and move between stations, a round stool with a back is the more comfortable seat and every pick on this page has one. Saddle stools for clinical work are ranked here, and the shape is explained here.

What we have not done

We have not used any of these stools. Every figure here is copied from the manufacturer's published specification with the listing linked on each card. How a gas lift behaves after two years of being raised and dropped forty times a day, and how PU leather holds up to hair color and solvent, are not on a spec sheet.

No maker in this field publishes a warranty term, so the cost-per-warranty-year figure we use elsewhere on this site cannot be computed for any of them.

What we looked at and left out

Exclusions are explainable or they are not exclusions. Each of these failed a published disqualifier, and the reason is the spec, not a preference.

ProductWhy it is not ranked
SUPER DEAL SD0918 Hydraulic Rolling Salon StoolThe listing says the chair measures "up to 27 in" and never says what it measures down to, and it publishes no rated capacity. A ceiling with no floor is not a height range, and this page ranks on the range.
JMU Dental Saddle Stool with Back and Dual Swing-Out ArmrestsIf you work leaning over a reclined client for hours - lash, facial, dental - a saddle seat opens your hips instead of folding them, and that is a different product from the round stools on this page. [Dental and clinical saddle stools are ranked here](/active-seating/dental-saddle-stools).

Questions people actually ask

What is the best stool for a hairstylist?
On published figures, the Boss Be Well B245-BK: a 20.5 to 26.5 in seat-height range covers a seated client through to a raised chair, and it is the only stool in our field that also publishes seat dimensions, a 20 in foot ring and a 275 lb capacity. We have not used it.
What height should a salon stool be?
High enough that your elbows sit at the height of the thing you are working on, bent between 90 and 120 degrees with your shoulders relaxed. Because that changes with every station, buy on the range rather than the height - 6 in of travel covers a lash bed through to a shampoo bowl.
Do I need a stool with a backrest?
If you move between stations and sit upright between clients, yes - every pick on this page has one and it is the cheapest comfort there is. If you spend the whole day leaning forward over a client, the backrest goes unused and a saddle seat is a better conversation.
What about a foot ring?
It matters above roughly 22 in of seat height, where your feet stop reaching the floor. Three stools here publish one and only the Boss publishes its diameter. None publishes whether the ring adjusts independently, which is the figure we would most like to see.
Salon stool or saddle stool?
A round salon stool if you sit upright and move around. A saddle stool if you lean forward over a reclined client for hours - it drops your thighs and opens the hip angle instead of folding you at the waist. The clinical saddle field is ranked separately on this site.
How much weight do these stools hold?
Where it is published, 250 to 300 lb - the SONGMICS states the highest at 300 lb on a 22 in five-star base. Two listings in our field publish no capacity at all, which is why neither is a pick.
