Best armrest pads for an office chair

A pad does two things at once: it softens a hard armrest and it raises it. The published thickness is what decides whether that fixes your elbow height or breaks it.

What we did and did not do

Units we claim to have tested: 0. Everyone in this category says they tested twenty chairs. We have not sat in any of these, and we say so.

What we did instead: compiled every figure each manufacturer publishes, computed the fit ranges from a cited anthropometric table, and linked the source for each number so you can check the arithmetic. Where a manufacturer does not publish a figure, we say that rather than filling the gap. The full method, including what we cannot assess, is here.

Forearms resting on the edge of a white desk

Buy the YaZimalu FS-704 if your elbows sit below your desk, and the Smiry if they do not. That is the whole decision, and it turns on one published figure: an armrest pad raises your armrest by its own thickness. The YaZimalu publishes 3 in, the Smiry publishes 1.34 in, and those are two different products solving two different problems with the same name.

If you want to hedge, the MABOZOO is the only armrest pad we found that adjusts: its middle layer attaches with hook-and-loop so you build it at either 2 in or 4 in. One purchase, two heights.

The second figure is the fit window, and half this category does not publish one. Armrests vary from about 3 in wide on a slim mesh task chair to 11 in long on an executive chair, and a pad that overhangs slides off under your forearm. Five makers here state the armrest dimensions they fit. Buy from those five.

YaZimalu FS-704 Cooling Gel Armrest Pads (set of 2)

8.4/10 · scored on the published rubric

The thickest pad here at a published 3 in, which is the whole point of the product: a pad raises your armrest by its own thickness, and 3 in closes most of the gap between a low armrest and a standard desk.

Why you might not: Three inches is too much if your armrests are already at the right height - it will push your shoulders up instead. Measure the gap before you buy this rather than the 1.3 in option.

Footprint9.8 x 4.3 in

Adjustments published (3): fits chair arms 3 to 6 in wide, as published; dual-sided fastener straps with anti-slip particles; removable machine-washable cover on a hidden zipper.

Not published by the manufacturer: foam density; warranty term; gel layer thickness. We have flagged these rather than guessed.

02 · Only One That Adjusts

MABOZOO Gel Arm Pads, Height Adjustable (set of 2)

7.6/10 · scored on the published rubric

The only armrest pad we found that adjusts at all. The middle layer attaches with hook-and-loop so you build it at either 2 in or 4 in, which means one purchase covers two different gaps.

Why you might not: At 8.6 in it is the shortest pad here, so on a long armrest the back of your forearm sits on bare plastic. MABOZOO also publishes no armrest-width window, so you are measuring blind.

Adjustments published (4): pad height, published as a 2 in or 4 in build via the hook-and-loop middle layer; two extra-long fastener straps; anti-slip rubber base; removable washable cover.

Not published by the manufacturer: foam density; warranty term; armrest width window. We have flagged these rather than guessed.

BEAUTRIP FS02Gel Ergonomic Armrest Pads (set of 2)

7.8/10 · scored on the published rubric

An arc-contoured pad at a published 2.7 in with a cooling gel layer over memory foam, and it states the armrest width it fits - 3 to 6 in - which half this category does not.

Why you might not: The contour is shaped for a forearm lying along the pad. If you rest only your elbow point on the armrest, a flat pad spreads that load better than a curved one.

Published figures, from the BEAUTRIP listing. Blank rows below are figures the manufacturer does not publish.

04 · Best for Long Armrests

Aloudy FSD-1009 Memory Foam Armrest Pads (set of 2)

7.2/10 · scored on the published rubric

The only pad here sized for a long armrest: Aloudy publishes a 6 to 10.5 in fit window, where most of this field stops at 6 in. It opens its bullets with "please measure first", which is the right instruction.

Why you might not: At 1.5 in it adds half what the thickest pad here does, so it is padding rather than a height fix. Aloudy also warns that the velvet finish bothers some skin.

05 · Best for Narrow Armrests

Smiry Memory Foam Armrest Pads (set of 2)

7.2/10 · scored on the published rubric

The narrowest fit window published in this field - 3 to 4.5 in - which makes it the one for a slim task-chair armrest that wider pads overhang. It is also the longest pad here at 10.04 in.

Why you might not: 1.34 in of foam will not change your elbow height in any way you notice. Buy this for pressure, not for geometry.

FORCHEER Stretch Jacquard Armrest Covers (2 pieces)

4.8/10 · scored on the published rubric

The cheapest thing in this category by a wide margin, and genuinely useful for its actual purpose: covering an armrest whose surface is peeling.

Why you might not: Skip this if your elbows hurt. It is a fabric cover with no padding at all - it changes how the armrest looks, not how hard it is or how high it sits.

Adjustments published (2): elastic band fit, published for arm length 8 to 13 in and arm width 2.4 to 3 in; machine washable.

Not published by the manufacturer: foam thickness (there is no foam); padding material; warranty term. We have flagged these rather than guessed.

Why your elbows hurt in the first place

Two causes, and they want opposite pads. Pressure - a hard plastic armrest concentrating your forearm's weight on the ulnar nerve where it passes the elbow - wants softness, and 1.3 in of memory foam is plenty. Height - armrests set below your desk, so you choose between resting your arms and reaching your keyboard - wants thickness, and 1.3 in will not touch it.

OSHA's own target is the one to measure against: elbows in close to the body and bent between 90 and 120 degrees, with shoulders relaxed. If your armrests make you drop your shoulders to reach them, they are too low and a thick pad is a genuine fix. If they make you shrug, they are too high and no pad will help - that needs the armrest adjusted or removed.

How we ranked these

  • Fit range - published pad thickness first, because it is both the cushioning and the height change, then the armrest width or length window the maker states. A pad that publishes neither cannot be ranked here.
  • Adjustability - a pad is usually a fixed object, so this scores on attachment: straps versus slip-on, buckles, non-slip undersides, and in exactly one case an actual height adjustment.
  • Size and footprint - published length and width against the armrests these are meant to fit. Overhang is the most common reason a pad ends up in a drawer.
  • Materials and build - memory foam, gel layer, cover material, and whether the cover comes off to be washed. No maker in this field publishes a warranty term or a foam density.
  • Spec coverage - how many of the above the maker publishes. The full rubric is here.

The last row is a different product sold in the same aisle. FORCHEER's covers have no padding at all - they are stretch fabric that goes over an armrest whose surface is peeling. That is a real and common problem and they solve it cheaply. They will not change how hard the armrest is or how high it sits, which is what the rest of this page is about.

What a pad cannot fix

A pad only ever goes up. If your armrests are already too high - shoulders shrugged, elbows above the desk - every pad on this page makes it worse, and the fix is to lower the armrest, swap to a chair with height-adjustable arms, or take the arms off entirely.

A pad does not change armrest width or spacing either. If the arms are set too far apart for your shoulders, you are abducting at the shoulder all day and padding the landing point does not address it. That is a chair-fit problem, and on a chair whose arms do not move, it is a reason to replace the chair rather than accessorize it. Chairs ranked by published adjustment are here.

What we have not done

We have not used any of these pads. Every figure on this page is copied from the manufacturer's published specification with the listing linked on each card. Whether a gel layer still feels cool after an hour, and whether a strap holds through a year of sliding under a desk, are not on a spec sheet.

Several listings in this category describe their pads as relieving elbow or nerve pain. We are not repeating that as a benefit. Nothing here is medically reviewed. Persistent numbness or tingling in the ring and little fingers is a reason to see a clinician, not a reason to buy foam.

What we looked at and left out

Exclusions are explainable or they are not exclusions. Each of these failed a published disqualifier, and the reason is the spec, not a preference.

ProductWhy it is not ranked
ERGO OFFICE Thick Memory Foam Armrest Cushions (set of 2)Calls itself "thick memory foam" and never publishes a thickness. On this page thickness is the ranking criterion, because it is simultaneously the cushioning and the height change - so a pad that will not state it has nothing to be ranked on.
Sunnors Memory Foam Armrest Pads (set of 2)Three figures, two versions. Its bullet says 9 by 5 by 1.5 in; the listing's own dimension block says 10 by 5.2 by 1.57 in. The fit window it publishes (6 to 11 in arms) is genuinely useful, which is why it is named here rather than ignored.

Questions people actually ask

What are the best armrest pads for an office chair?
It depends which problem you have. For elbows sitting below the desk, the YaZimalu FS-704 publishes the thickest lift in our field at 3 in and states the 3 to 6 in armrest width it fits. For pressure alone on a correctly-set chair, the Smiry's 1.34 in adds cushioning without changing your geometry. We have not used either.
Do armrest pads raise your armrests?
By their full thickness, always - that is unavoidable and it is the figure to shop on. Our field runs from 1.2 in to 4 in. If your armrests are already at the right height, buy the thinnest pad you can find; if they are too low, the thickness is the point.
How do I know what size armrest pad to buy?
Measure your armrest's length and width first, then buy from a maker that publishes a fit window - five of ours do. The windows differ a lot: 3 to 4.5 in wide on one pad, 6 to 10.5 in long on another. A pad that overhangs will slide out from under your forearm.
Why do my elbows hurt when I use my office chair?
Usually one of two things: a hard armrest concentrating pressure where the ulnar nerve passes the elbow, or armrests set too low so you drop a shoulder to reach them. A pad fixes the first with softness and the second with thickness. If the armrests are too high, no pad helps - that needs the armrest lowered.
Are armrest covers the same as armrest pads?
No, and the listings are easy to confuse. A cover is stretch fabric with no foam - it hides a peeling armrest. A pad is foam, usually with a cover over it, and it changes both how hard the armrest is and how high. Buy a cover for looks and a pad for comfort.
Can I just remove the armrests instead?
Often, yes, and on a chair whose arms are at the wrong height and do not adjust, that is a legitimate answer - plenty of drafting stools ship armless on purpose. The trade is that your forearms then have nowhere to rest between typing bursts, so the desk edge takes the load.
